Situated on the banks of the Vaigai River, Madurai, the ancient capital of the Pandayan kings, is a sacred place. Legend has it, that the divine nectar falling from the Lord Shiva’s locks gave the town its name Madhurapuri, now known as Madurai.
Today, in the heart of town stands the overwhelming Meenakshi sundareswara Temple, with its immense gopurams towering over the city. The splendidly carved temple complex, the main attraction of the town, draws pilgrims and visitors from all over the country. A lively, bustling town, Madurai is a business cantre famed for its traditional handicrafts in brass and bronze.
Madurai’s most important festival celebrates the sacred wedding ceremony of the Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar during the Tamil month of Chithirai, which falls during March-April. On the occasion, a well decked chariot carrying the images of the couple, is taken around the town. The evocative notes of the nadaswaram and the drums, create a festive ambience. The festival gathers a mammoth crowd. Another important celebration is the annual Float Festival, when images of Meenakshi and her consort are floated on the Mariamman Tank, on an illuminated raft bedecked with flowers.
