The Brihadeeshwara Temple
Built in the 10 th century by the great king, Raja Chola, is an engineering marvel.It is considered to be artistically the most perfect of Dravida temples. It has excellent sculptures and traces of paintings.
The temple with its 66.5 meters high ‘srivamana’ dominating the city is built of granite.
The temple consists of a cupolic dome which is octagonal in shape and rests on a single square block of granite, weighing 81.3 tonnes. The moulded plinth is extensively engraved with inscriptions. On the walls of the inner passage are life-size iconographic representations of various Hindu deities.
